When I was a child, I used to ask my mother for money, but she would tell me, "You shouldn't spend money now, wait." Then she’d say, "Start saving little by little from today… when you’ve saved up enough, I’ll buy you something nice." And after saying that, my mother opened a credit account just for me. Whenever someone gave me money, I would hand it over to my mother to deposit into my credit account.

ছোটবেলায় “ব্যাংক” কথাটার মানে আমি জানতাম না। কিন্তু জানতাম, যখনই টাকার দরকার পড়বে, কোথায় যেতে হবে — মায়ের কাছে।
৫ টাকার আইসক্রিম হোক বা ৫০ টাকার স্কুল ফান্ড, মায়ের শাড়ির আঁচলে ঠিক ওইটুকুই থাকত, যতটুকু আমার দরকার। না কোনো ফর্ম ফিলাপ, না কোনো প্রশ্ন — শুধু একটুখানি হাসি আর বলতেন,
“বুঝে খরচ করিস।”
একবার ১০০ টাকা হারিয়ে ফেলেছিলাম, যেটা মা আমাকে স্কুল ফি দেওয়ার জন্য দিয়েছিলেন। ভয়ে ভয়ে কেঁদে ফেলেছিলাম। ভেবেছিলাম খুব বকা খাব। কিন্তু মা কিছুই বলেননি। জড়িয়ে ধরে শুধু বলেছিলেন,
— “টাকা আবার আসবে, কিন্তু মনটা হারিয়ে ফেলিস না। পরের বার একটু খেয়াল রাখবি।”
সেদিন বুঝেছিলাম, ব্যাংক শুধু টাকা জমিয়ে রাখে না — শেখায় কীভাবে তার মূল্য দিতে হয়।
মা ছিলেন আমার সঞ্চয়, আমার ঋণ, আমার নিরাপত্তা — সব কিছু একসঙ্গে।
আজও, যখন ওনার হাতে কিছু টাকা দিই, মা ঠিক আগের মতোই সেটা শাড়ির আঁচলে লুকিয়ে রাখেন — যেন সময় বদলালেও মা বদলাননি।
কারণ, মা ছিলেন, আছেন, আর থাকবেন — আমার প্রথম আর সবচেয়ে বিশ্বাসযোগ্য ব্যাংক।

ছোটবেলায় ঈদ মানেই ছিল নতুন জামা আর সালামির টাকা। যেই আত্নীয় টাকা দিত, কিছুক্ষণ পরেই মা এসে বলতেন, “দাও, আমি রেখে দিচ্ছি। না হলে হারিয়ে যাবে।” তখন না বুঝেই দিয়ে দিতাম, যদিও ভেতরে ভেতরে খারাপ লাগত। মনে হতো, আমার নিজের জমানো টাকা যেন আমার কাছেই নেই।
এরকমই এক ঈদের কিছুদিন পর মা আমাকে একটা ছোট বাক্স দিলেন। খুলে দেখি, তার ভিতরে সোনার চেইন। অবাক হয়ে তাকিয়ে আছি, মা হেসে বললেন, “তোমার সালামির টাকা দিয়েই কিনেছি। শুধু খরচ নয়, সঞ্চয়ও শেখা দরকার।”
সেদিন বুঝেছিলাম, মা কেবল অভিভাবক নন—তিনি আমার জীবনের প্রথম ব্যাংক। এমন এক ব্যাংক, যেখানে জমা থাকে বিশ্বাস আর নিঃস্বার্থ ভালোবাসা, যেখান থেকে ঋণ নেওয়া যায়, কিন্তু শোধ করতে হয় না।

ছোট বেলা থেকে মা আমাদের বাবার কষ্ট ও আমাদের প্রতি তাঁর আত্মত্যাগ অনুধাবন করতে শিখিয়েছেন এবং অর্থ ব্যয়ে সচেতন হতে ও সঞ্চয়ের ব্যাপারে উদ্বুদ্ধ করতেন। মা সবসময় আমাদের কীভাবে টিফিনের টাকা কিংবা সালামি টাকা বাঁচিয়ে নিজেদের বড় বড় শখগুলো পূরণ করতে হয় সেই শিক্ষা দিয়েছেন ফলপ্রসূতে কলেজে উঠে নিজেদের জমানো টাকা দিয়ে একটি কম্পিউটার ও ডিএসলার ক্যামেরা কিনেছিলাম। এইভাবে নিজের অনেক শখ ও প্রয়োজনে সময় সঞ্চয়ের অর্থ আমাকে সবসময়ই উপকৃত করেছে। এখন আমরা দুই ভাই শিক্ষাজীবন শেষ করে কর্মজীবনে পদার্পন করেছি কিন্তু মায়ের দেয়া সেই ছোট বেলার কীভাবে অর্থের মূল্য দিতে হয় এবং কীভাবে সঞ্চয়ী হয়ে ভবিষৎ এর জন্য নিরাপদ অবস্থান নিশ্চিত করতে হয় সেই উপদেশ এখনো মেনে চলি যার ফলে আজ আমরা যথেষ্ট ভালো জীবনযাপন করতে পারছি আলহামদুল্লিলাহ।

One of my favorite memories is when my mother taught me the value of money by letting me earn a toy I really wanted. I had seen a red remote-control car on TV and begged her to buy it. Instead of saying yes, she told me I had to earn it by doing small tasks at home like watering plants, folding clothes, and cleaning the table. For each task, she gave me a few taka, which I saved in a jar. At first, it felt fun, but later I realized how much effort it took. Some days I was tired or lazy, but my mother reminded me that money doesn’t come easily. After nearly a month, I saved enough to buy the car myself. It felt amazing, and I took better care of it than any other toy. That experience taught me that money comes from hard work, and I should never waste it. I’ll always remember that lesson from my mother.

আমার বয়স তখন মাত্র ১০। খেলতে খেলতে একদিন পাড়ার দোকানে গেলাম। বন্ধুরা সবাই ঝালমুড়ি কিনছে, আমার পকেটে একটা টাকাও নেই। একটু লজ্জা, একটু খিদে—চোখে জল চলে এল।
বাড়ি ফিরে মা’কে কিছু না বলেই চুপচাপ বসে ছিলাম। মা বুঝে ফেললেন।
বললেন,
— “কী হয়েছে? খেলতে মন লাগছে না কেন?”
আমি মাথা নিচু করে বললাম,
— “সবার কাছে টাকা ছিল, আমার ছিল না। আমি শুধু দাঁড়িয়ে দেখছিলাম।”
মা হেসে বললেন না কিছু। সন্ধ্যায়, একখানা ছোট খাতা আর একটা কৌটো এনে আমার হাতে দিলেন। বললেন,
“এই কৌটোটা তোর ব্যাংক। এখানে প্রতি সপ্তাহে আমি তোকে ৫ টাকা করে দেব। খরচ কর, জমা রাখ—যা খুশি কর। কিন্তু হিসেবটা খাতায় লিখবি। বুঝে টাকা খরচ করাটা শিখে নে।”
সেই কৌটো আর খাতা ছিল আমার জীবনের প্রথম ব্যাংক অ্যাকাউন্ট। টাকা জমার আনন্দ, খরচ করার দায়িত্ব, আর ভুল করলে নিজেই শেখার রাস্তা—সব শেখাল মা।
আজ ব্যাংকে অনেক অ্যাকাউন্ট আছে, কিন্তু মায়ের সেই কৌটোটা এখনো আমার ওয়ার্ডরোবের কোণায় পড়ে আছে স্মৃতির মতো, মুল্যবোধের মতো
কারণ মা শুধু টাকা দেননি, দিয়েছিলেন টাকাকে সম্মান করতে শেখার শিক্ষা। টাকার সঠিক মূল্য কীভাবে দিতে হয়, তা শেখানোর জায়গা।

মা, তোমাকে কখনো বলা হয়নি যে তোমাকে খুব ভালোবাসি। কেন তুমি আমাকে এত ভালোবাসলে? কেন এত কষ্ট করে বড় করলে? তোমার ভালোবাসা আমাকে সংবেদনশীল করে তুলেছে।
আমার শৈশব কেটেছে গ্রামের ছোট্ট কুঁড়েঘরে। সকাল হলেই তোমার দিন শুরু হতো - মাঠে কাজ, গৃহস্থালির দায়িত্ব। ক্লান্ত হয়েও মুখে থাকত মায়াবী হাসি।
নার্সিং ভর্তি পরীক্ষার দিন শহরে আসার সময় তুমি ভাত আর আলুভর্তা দিয়েছিলে। বলেছিলে, পরিশ্রমের কোনো বিকল্প নেই। ভর্তি হওয়ার পর টাকার অভাবে তুমি শেষ গয়নাটুকু বিক্রি করে টাকা পাঠালে।
চাকরিতে জয়েন করার দিন তোমার গর্বিত কণ্ঠ শুনে মনে হলো, সব পরিশ্রম সার্থক। একদিন ডিউটি শেষে ক্লান্ত হয়ে বাড়ি ফিরছিলাম, হঠাৎ তোমার ফোন - তুই ভালো থাকলেই আমি ভালো থাকি। তোমার এই কথাগুলোই আমাকে শক্তি দেয়।
আজ আমি মানুষের সেবায় নিবেদিত, তোমার ভালোবাসা আর ত্যাগের শিক্ষা আমাকে পথ দেখায়। মা, তোমার মতোই নিঃস্বার্থ হতে চাই - এটাই আমার প্রার্থনা।

আজ আমি একজন সফল প্রকৌশলী, তবে যখনই ঢাকা শহরের ব্যস্ত জীবনে নিজের পরিচয় দিই, মায়ের মুখ সব সময় মনে পড়ে। জানি, আমার প্রতিটি সাফল্যের পেছনে যে মানুষের অক্লান্ত ভালোবাসা ও ত্যাগ রয়েছে, তিনি আমার মা।
আমরা ছিলাম দরিদ্র পরিবারের সদস্য। মায়ের শিক্ষার সীমাবদ্ধতা ছিল, তবে তার স্বপ্ন ছিল অসীম—চেয়েছিলেন আমি বড় হয়ে ইঞ্জিনিয়ার হবো। সেই স্বপ্ন পূরণের জন্য মা নিজের জীবনকে উজাড় করে দিয়েছেন। নদীতে মাছ ধরেছেন, মানুষের বাড়িতে কাজ করেছেন, কখনো মুরগি-ছাগল পালন করে আমার পড়াশোনার খরচ জুগিয়েছেন।
একবার বইয়ের টাকা দিতে না পারায় স্কুলে অপমানিত হলাম। বাড়ি ফিরে মা আমাকে জড়িয়ে ধরে বললেন, কাঁদিস না, তোর বই আমি কালই কিনে দেব।পরের দিন মা তার পুরনো মাফলার বিক্রি করে বই কিনে এনেছেন।
আজকের এই সাফল্য আমার মা'র জন্য। তাঁর কষ্টের প্রতিদান আমি কখনোই দিতে পারব না, তবে মায়ের স্বপ্ন আমি বাঁচিয়ে রাখব।

প্রিয় আম্মু...
মা-ই আমাদের ছায়া; তাকে ঘিরে যত মায়া, মায়ের সাথে-ই মধুর সব স্মৃতি, আর মাকে নিয়ে-ই তো আমাদের যতো স্বপ্ন। মা যেখানে-ই থাকুন, চোখ বন্ধ করলেই যেন দেখতে পাই পরম মমতাময়ীর মুখ-খানি!
পড়াশোনার পাশাপাশি একটা মার্কেটিং জব করতাম ফুফাতো ভাইয়ের বিজনেস।
মার্কেটিং কাজের জন্য অনেক সময় রাতে ফিরতে দেরি হয়ে যেত রাত ৩/৪ টা হয়ে যেত। তখনও দেখতাম আম্মু অধীর আগ্রহে অপেক্ষা করতো দরজার পাশে বসে বসে আমি কবে ফিরবো এ-ই আশায়!
বড় ভাইয়ার ক্ষেত্রে-ও এমন হতো। জব থেকে ভাইয়া বাড়িতে আসবে বললে।
আমি যখন ফিরে এসে দেখতাম, আম্মু না ঘুমিয়ে, খাওয়া দাওয়া না করে বসে বকা দিতাম। কেন বসে আছেন এ-ই বলে!
হয়তো এগুলো-ই, সন্তানদের প্রতি মায়েদের অব্যক্ত ভালবাসার বহিঃপ্রকাশ।
মা দিবসে আমার চাওয়া, হাজার বছর বেচে থাকুক মায়েরা সন্তানদের পরম যত্নে আর ভালবাসায়।
সকল মমতাময়ী মা'কে জানায় বিনম্র শ্রদ্ধা এবং অফুরন্ত ভালবাসা 🖤

After completing my A-levels, I started teaching part-time at a school and soon began offering coaching classes at home. Teaching became a consistent part of my life throughout my undergraduate years. At that time, I didn’t think much about saving, I spent whatever I earned. One day, my mother noticed this and asked me for a loan of 10,000 Taka. I gave it to her without hesitation. To my surprise, she went straight to the bank and opened a fixed deposit of 1 lakh taka in my name. When she returned, she told me I now owed her 90,000 taka, which I would have to repay in monthly installments. Bit by bit, I repaid the full amount. Once I did, she used the savings to open more fixed deposits under my name. That experience not only introduced me to the value of saving but also taught me discipline and how to manage money wisely, skills that proved invaluable when I later went abroad for my master’s degree.
